High quality, energy efficient and contemporary alterations and additions complement the traditional heritage front facade of this cottage in Mosman Council. The intent of the project is to create an unassuming transition from the front door to the rear of the property and a family home embodying playing, relaxing, entertaining, working and resting.
Upon entering the house, the existing bedrooms of the ground floor have been uplifted with revitalised timber floors and paint. After passing the bedrooms, the extension's significant height and light is further enhanced with a double-storey opening and skylights and high level windows. High ceilings and a warm material palette make the formerly dark interiors feel welcoming, open and homely.
When seeing the house for the first time we noted an existing rear extension, whose layout closed in the spaces and provided little opportunity for togetherness. The floorplan has been manipulated to move key spaces closer together and in direct sight lines of the backyard and pool area. The second storey addition boasts a clean, linear facade and the entire envelope contains improved insulation, double glazed windows and a light-coloured roof to minimise solar heat gain.
Materials selected are durable and hardy, and the detailed consideration into room sizes and transitions minimises the need for modifications for the duration of the growing family's occupation of the home.
The family can now enjoy a Mosman home that maintains the Federation facade, synonymous with the remainder of the street, whilst also living amongst a high-quality, contemporary addition that provides all occupants and visitors with the aura of a family haven for many, many years to come. These are key components of any residential architects in Sydney.
Shore Architects are priveleged to work as architects in Mosman and the surrounding areas. For any more information on this project, or others, please get in contact and we'd be more than happy to discuss.
